Jouney Into Space was written as a trilogy and is an expansive epic radio serial consisting of over 50 episodes. This pre-launch breifing will provide an over view of the three original series first aired from 21 September 1953 to the 19th of January 1954 and again in an edited form in 1958. Later postings will cover each individual episode in a more detailed way.
Operation Luna – The First Series:
Originally titled Journey Into Space, (billed in the Radio Times as “Journey Into Space”, A Tale of the Future) and later renamed Operation Luna began on 21 Sept, 1953. This the first series was set in the far flung future of 1965 on a mission to the moon but once there, Captain Jet Morgan and his crew aboard the spaceship Luna, encounter a race of time travelers who strand them back on a prehistoric Earth! How do they get back?
Note: Re-broadcast Wednesdays from 26th March 1958 to 18th June 1958 at 7:30 PM for a total of 13 episodes. The series available here at Spacemen’s Luck for listening is this newer edited production of the series originally broadcast in 1953 with all the earthbound episodes removed, reducing this series to 13 unlike the other two series which are 20 episodes each. If anyone has the missing earthbound episodes please contact me so that they may be shared.
The Red Planet – The Second Series:
The Red Planet started its 20 week run a year later on 6 Sept, 1954. Set in the early 70s, this series has Captain Jet Morgan and crew, in the flagship Discovery, heading a fleet of spaceships on a 35 million mile round trip to explore Mars, the mysterious and, as they believe, uninhabited red planet. Once there they encounter the strange residents, who turn out to be…
The World In Peril – The Third Series:
The World In Peril began its 20 episode series on 26 Sept, 1955 and was to be the final radio journey for Captain Jet Morgan and his crew, at least for the 1950′s. Captain Morgan and his crew are sent on a secret mission to Mars to discover all they can about the threatened Martian invasion of Earth. But they’re taken prisoner and imprisoned on board the flagship of the invasion fleet and they learn the awful secret of the Martian plan. Can they save the Earth in time?
Series 1 is a story almost completely seperate form series 2 and 3. The only consistancy is the characters, who carry over to series 2 and 3. These two series can be seen as one long 40 part story, so faithful is the continuity, characters and plot structure between the two.
