On March 13, 2008, the International Space Station passed across the field-of-view of Germany's remote sensing satellite, TerraSAR-X, at a distance of 195 kilometers, or 122 miles, and at a relative speed of 34,540 kilometers per hour, or more than 22,000 mph. In contrast to optical cameras, radar does not 'see' surfaces. Instead, it is much more aware of the edges and corners which bounce back the microwave signal it transmits. Smooth surfaces such as those on the station's solar generators or the radiator panels used to dissipate excess heat, unless directly facing the radar antenna, tend to deflect rather than reflect the radar beam, causing these features to appear on the radar image as dark areas. The radar image of the station therefore looks like a dense collection of bright spots from which the outlines of the space station can be clearly identified. The central element on the station, to which all the modules are docked, has a grid structure that presents a multiplicity of reflecting surfaces to the radar beam, making it readily identifiable. This image has a resolution of about one meter (about 39 inches). In other words, objects can be depicted as discrete units--that is, shown separately--provided that they are at least one meter apart. If they are closer together than that, they tend to merge into a single block on a radar image. Commander Buzz Corey is concerned about the number of accidents Spaceway’s Inc. are having on their freight and passenger ships operating in the outer planets of the Solar System (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto), which seems to coincide with the expansion into the outer planet routes of the powerful TransOrbit shipping line. The TransOrbit Shipping line is headed by a woman named Jelna Fenton who has self identified herself as the “Queen of Space” and an assistant and all around thug Brax Cardo.

An aside: Since this episode is all about the outer planets perhaps Jelna Fenton, and this episode should be called the “Queen of Outer Space.” The movie Queen of Outer Space is one of my favorite space movies and a cult classic.

Commander Corey decides to launch an investigation and assigns Tonga (assistant security chief of Space Patrol) to pose as a reporter for Inter-Planet Weekly and ride as a passenger aboard a Spaceways, Inc. ship. Her cover is that she is writing articles about life in the outer planets.

After Jelna Fenton and Brax Cardo fail to sabotage the space liner that Tonga is on, by programming the Orbit computer with the wrong vector and sabotaging their Space-A-Phone planning to strand them in space. However, Tonga is equipped with a Miniature Space-A-Phone so she contacts Commander Corey and averts disaster.

Next Jelna Fenton and Brax Cardo attempt to blow up the Spaceway’s Spaceship Comet but Brax Cardo is discovered in the act of placing the bomb by Commander Corey and Cadet Happy. Cardo gets the drop on them and he shoots them with a ray gun that puts them to sleep. Cardo’s plan is to leave them aboard the ship tied up so they will blow up with the ship.

Meanwhile Tonga in her disguise as a writer for the Inter-Planet Weekly has just completed an interview with Jelna Fenton when Brax Cardo reports back. Listening outside Jelna Fenton’s office Tonga hears what has happened to Commander Corey and Cadet Happy. She heads to the Spaceways ship and releases them.

Jelna Fenton and Brax Cardo realize they are now in trouble for all their sabotage’s and capture Tonga for insurance and escape Uranus in their ship. Tonga still has her Space-A-Phone and contacts the Commander who pursues and sneaks aboard Jelna Fenton’s ship and captures them and rescues Tonga.
