Our story begins with Commander “Buzz” Correy and Cadet Happy of the United Planets Space Patrol are aboard the Battle Cruiser Terra V en route to Jupiter’s number two moon. An unmanned instrument station has stopped sending back signals.
As they approach the location of the station they realize the station’s atmosphere dome is gone. They land to investigate and they find the instruments are in place and the walls and the doors to the dome are still there but the plastic dome is completely gone without a trace.
Buzz and Happy head to Jupiter to the Shargon Physiological Center near Jupiter City where remote instrument station’s data is received and interpreted. There they meet with Major Robertson and Dr. William Conrad who is in charge of the program of monitoring the remote unmanned instrument stations. Commander Correy dispatches Major Robertson back to Jupiters number two moon to investigate the missing shell.

Buzz and Happy turn into their temporary quarters for the night and when they wake up they find it is still dark outside. Dr. Conrad contacts the Commander and reports the cause of the darkness is billions of insects have covered Shargon’s atmosphere dome.
The Commander and Happy meet with Dr. Conrad at the Spaceport Master’s office where they are analyzing a couple of the insects that they see are a type of beetle. Suddenly one of the beetles escapes from the plastic container that it was in. At the same time the base sounds a yellow alert indicating a breach in Shargon’s atmosphere dome. The inhabitants of Shargon are ordered into structures that have a self contained atmosphere.
Correy orders Major Robertson, who is now aboard Space Patrol Cruiser J571, with a squadron of Space Patrol Cruiser’s to spray insecticide DT12X onto the beetles over the dome. Later Robby reports that there was no effect from the insecticide. Then Commander Correy comes up with the idea to use ultra high frequency sound waves.
Commander Correy, Happy and Dr. Conrad now aboard the Space Patrol Lab Ship X211 that has a ultra high frequency sound wave generator aboard. The ultra high frequency sound wave generator works and the beetles slide off the dome. But Major Robertson reports that the beetles have begun attacking the atmosphere dome on Jupiter Moon 3 Research Station where there are over 100 men stationed and that the station has lost all power. Happy suggest getting over to Moon 3 with the ultra high frequency sound wave generator to save the station. Buzz reminds Happy that it won’t work on Moon 3 because there is no atmosphere on the moon.
Buzz then asks Dr. Conrad about using the Delta Ray. The Dr. say’s it should work but they would have to focus the Delta Ray in such a way that the ray wouldn’t enter the dome or it would kill the people within. Buzz dispatches Robby to Moon Number 3 to get the power to the station restored while the rest of them head to Saturn City to get the Delta Ray.
After Buzz and the others arrive on Moon 3 they get a call from Major Robertson who is in a space suit outside the power unit that he was swarmed by the beetles and has fallen into a crevice. Buzz heads over to the power dome and find him in the crevice covered in the beetles. They fear his space suit may have been punctured.
