Commander Buzz Correy and Cadet Happy are on routine patrol to the planet Pluto where reports of a strange object far beyond Pluto is slowly approaching the solar system. Buzz and Happy head out beyond Pluto and discover an old abandoned spaceship. After boarding the derelict they discover a man just barely alive.
Transferring the injured man back to Terra V they make fast to the derelict and head back to planet Terra with the radiation soaked spaceship U87 in tow and the very sick spaceman Wes Pence. An investigation back at Space Patrol Headquarters on Terra reveals that the spaceship U87 is of Saturn registry, owned by one Joe O’Malley who had abandoned Wes Pence who must of been adrift for six to eight months.

Once back on Terra the Space Patrol search the space freighter and find a million credits of uranium hidden onboard. While Happy is in the hospital room of Wes Pence he is surprised and knocked out by Pence. Happy is later revived by Buzz Correy to find the patient, Wes Pence, has escaped.
Wes Pence tracks down his treacherous old partner in Keppler City, Mars and offers him a deal. It seems after O’Malley had abandoned Pence he found a space cloud composed of an enormous load of pure uranium with chunks of it as large as a spaceship. Pence makes a deal with O’Malley in exchange for getting a space freighter. He thinks the Space Patrol believes he has stolen the load of uranium found on the spaceship U87 and his plan is to go back out past Pluto and get a bunch more of the uranium and that will prove he didn’t steal the load found on spaceship U87.
But Commander Correy has researched where the uranium could of came from and none is missing. He then concludes that Pence knows of a source of naturally pure uranium and is attempting to get more. Correy concludes it must of come from outside the solar system and that Pence is headed out for it. Also Correy realizes that if they don’t catch Pence soon he will die of exposure to radiation.
They begin tracking down Pence and learn he has gone to Keppler City on Mars where O’Malley has arranged for a space freighter at the Lowell City Space Port. Commander Correy learns that Pence and O’Malley have blasted off. Following the vector course they took they follow after them outside the solar system to the area where they originally found Pence.
Buzz and Happy track them out to what appears to be a uranium cloud. But the space freighter registry MSE312 is struck by one of the uranium rocks and disabled.
