The crew of the Polaris are on another training mission with Major “Blastoff” Connell and are looking for caves on Pluto that will be large enough for setting up future colonies. While Tom and Major Connel look around the area around the Cruiser Polaris, Astro and Roger disobey orders and take the jet boat for a test ride. When Tom and Major Connel come back to the ship they find Astro and Roger gone. Finally Roger checks in by radio telling the Major that they have crashed.
Major Connell is so mad at the two cadets that he awards them 99 demerits each (100 gets you expelled). Roger tries to weasel out by telling the Major that they have found just the cave they came to Pluto for. Despite the seemingly good news Major Connell orders them to stay put and out of trouble.
Arriving on the scene of the newly discovered cave Tom and Major Connell are shown the new cave and they find that it is unbelievably big. Maybe as big as 400 square miles. While investigating the cave they realize Astro is missing and is lost. After searching for Astro they find him in a crevice. After an exhaustive search Roger finds Astro nearly dead from lack of oxygen.
Tom and Roger are sent back to the surface to get the Jet Boat so they can fly it in and pickup Astro. Just as they are about to leave the cave the whole side of the mountain of snow and ice avalanche comes down totally covering the cave entrance with Astro and Connell trapped inside.
After hours of trying to remove the ice and snow by hand Tom gets the idea to use the Polaris stern jets to melt the entrance. Tom’s idea works and saves Astro and Major Connell.
The caves will be named the Polaris Colony after the crew who discovered the cave.
