The Polaris Unit are attending a Space Academy lecture by Dr Dale on astrophysics. As part of this class they are assigned a laboratory experiment on a newly discovered ore. This rare ore is from Asteroid 2049 and has only been found one other place in the solar system and that is Asteroid 2046. During the experiment an accidental mixing of elements caused an explostion proving the rare ore to be a new source of enery, in other words fuel.
Roger feels responible for the accident and admits his quilt to Dr. Dale who doesn’t know whether to dock him with demerits or reward him. She decides to have him be her Astrogator on a mission to Asteroid 2049 to see how the mining of the ore is proceeding and to conduct experiments but disappear and can not be reached.

Captain Strong, Tom and Astro are sent to Asteroid 2049 to investigate into their disapearance. The Polaris crew arrive on Asteroid 2049 and meet with Greg Mason who is the mining engineer in charge. He claims Dr. Dale and Roger never arrived on Asteroid 2049 and they have no idea where they are.
Captatin Strong and the crew of the Polaris set off into the Asteroid belt on a near hopeless search for their shipmate and Dr. Dale. After a lengthy and fruitless search and they are near giving up they catch a faint trace on their radar.
Closer inspection reveals it is Rocket Scout 9J alright. After receiving no response to their hales Captain Strong has Tom and Astro suit out in Full Space Gear and board the Rocket Scout 9J. Once onbard they find the ship abandoned with no sign of where Dr. Dale and Roger are.
Just before they are ready to leave Astro realizes that the ships reaction pile mass control rods have been removed and the ship is about to explode. Tom and Astro head for the escape hatch to escape but find the escape hatch has been jammed and cannot be opened.
