In Part 1 of The Giants of Mercury the Cadets were en route to Astro’s home world of Venus for some well deserved shore leave when Lieutenant Commander Burke of the Solar Guard’s Venus Port orders the cadets shore leave cancelled and diverts them to a Mercury Base to investigate a possible outbreak of Zero “A” Fever.
After Commander Burke back on Venus receives the Cadets request for additional forces, Burke didn’t believe them and instead of sending reinforcements and weapons he sends medics including a Dr. Ashton and Nurse Leslie Everett to Mercury in an unarmed Space Freighter because he didn’t believe their story of a giant man believing they have gone Zero “A.”

The Medics arrive intending to treat Tom, Roger and Astro for Zero “A” Fever but are surprised when a giant robot appears to be attacking the Polaris. They soon find out that it is only Roger and Astro controlling the robot.
However, the pirates soon regain control over the robots and capture Nurse Leslie Everett. Flying away from the Polaris with her in one of the robots arms. The cadets along with Dr. Ashton in the Polaris take off after the robots.
When the pirates in control of the robots realize they are being pursued by the Polaris contact the Cadets and threaten to drop Nurse Everett to the ground and kill her, unless the Polaris crew agree to surrender. When it appears that the Cadets are not going to surrender the pirates send orders to the robot carrying Nurse Everett to drop her.
With some quick thinking Tom uses the Polaris’ main transmitter, a stronger transmitter, than the pirates to retake control of the robot holding Nurse Everett. When the pirates realize that the Cadets have retaken control of the robot they order the other robot to attack.
Tom again exhibits cunning and skill with the Polaris when he manuvers the Polaris so that her rocket jet wash over their robot and knocks it from the sky. Landing the Polaris and the robot with Nurse Everett they bring her back onbard the Polaris.
In a last ditch effort to destroy the Cadets the pirates launch an atomic warhead at the Polaris. Do the cadets, Dr. Ashton and Nurse Leslie Everett survive? To find out listen below to episode 2 of The Giants of Mercury.
