The sixteenth episode in the Space Patrol radio show series is another one of those lost episodes. It is believed to have been broadcast on 17 January 1953. Though we believe we know the title of this episode the story line in not known. It is one of the tragedies of collecting old time radio (OTR) that many of these old gems are lost forever and only occasionally does one of these lost shows turn up from a previously unknown source.

* The Old Time Radio Researchers Organization Database indicates that this episode is lost and no longer available. Anyone who may discover a copy of this "Lost" episode and would like to get it into public circulation please contact Spaceman (Senior Rating) Ray.

Commander Correy is investigating some mysterious robberies. The robber(s) put the victims to sleep then make their get-a-way with whatever they have stolen. The head of the robbers is known as “The Sleep Walker.” In the latest robbery ITS Passenger Ship N157 has gone missing. After an all system alert goes out the ship is found out beyond the Neptune orbit. Unfortunately one of the passengers was kidnapped during the robbery. Commander Correy finds out that it is the Secretary General of the United Planets’s daughter, Carol Carlyle.

Thanks to Carol’s Miniature Space-A-Phone (which must not be widely used because the bad guys’s don’t suspect) she is able to contact Buzz and Happy and provide a signal that they can use to follow The Sleep Walker’s Class C Private Cruiser, PCP85. Space Patrol Radio and TV Show

The Secretary General has approved an appropriation to make a giant bubble to enclose the Venus Space Station. The process is conceived by brilliant scientist Dr. Berman which is a method of inflating atmosphere shells in space made of “electroplast.” The process is much like blowing up a balloon, however one kilometer in diameter, and once the giant sphere has hardened it is cut in half then put around the space station and the two halves are then welded together.

Buzz and Happy first discover a plot to sabotage the project when they intercept space-a-phone conversations about getting rid of GLEK. It turns out that GLEK is the more common name for “electroplast,” by the technicians who handle it. The plot is headed by Dr. Berman’s jealous former colleague (Kolgar played by Bela Kovacs).

Introduction To The Space Patrol Radio Show

Space Patrol was a science fiction juvenile adventure with shows on both television and radio. Space Patrol was created by Mike Moser, a former U.S. Navy Air Force Veteran who had been in charge of training hurricane-hunter squadrons in World War II. The TV show’s success spawned a radio version from October 1952 to March 1955 running for 129 episodes. The same cast of actors performed on both the TV and the radio shows. Similarly the writers, scripts, story lines and director were used. The TV and radio versions ran separate adventures, with some of the TV villains also appearing on the radio show.

I believe that the concept of Space Patrol came straight from the Golden Age of space era popularized by Robert Heinlein’s book “Space Cadet.” Space Cadet was a 1948 science fiction novel about Matt Dodson, who joins the Space Patrol to help preserve peace in the Solar System. The story is a military academy story translated into an outer space story of a teenage boy from Iowa who goes to the Military Academy to become an officer and sees action and adventure, assumes responsibilities far beyond his years, and becomes a man.
