Our story begins with Commander “Buzz” Correy and Cadet Happy of the United Planets Space Patrol are aboard the Battle Cruiser Terra V en route to Jupiter’s number two moon. An unmanned instrument station has stopped sending back signals.

As they approach the location of the station they realize the station’s atmosphere dome is gone. They land to investigate and they find the instruments are in place and the walls and the doors to the dome are still there but the plastic dome is completely gone without a trace.

Buzz and Happy head to Jupiter to the Shargon Physiological Center near Jupiter City where remote instrument station’s data is received and interpreted. There they meet with Major Robertson and Dr. William Conrad who is in charge of the program of monitoring the remote unmanned instrument stations. Commander Correy dispatches Major Robertson back to Jupiters number two moon to investigate the missing shell.

Destination Moon Rocketship 150x200 List of Classic Space Travel Movies By Decade

Picture of a Classic Rocketship of the 1950s

Below is a list of classic space travel movies listed by the decades. For this original publication I am including classic space travel movies from the 1950′ and 1960′. I will over time in later publications add additional decades. In later revisions I will update this list to include classic space travel movies produced as early as the first decade in the 1900′s and even movies right up to 2010 and (over time) beyond.

Once I add a decade in this list I believe I have a fairly comprehensive list, but, if you see a movie you know about is missing from the list, please use the comment system to tell me and the other visitors about it. This list is a work in progress because I am constantly finding some new gem I either had forgot about or never new of to begin with.

Captain Strong and Cadet Tom Corbett are assigned to assist an inventor named Mr. Franklin in the testing of an experimental spaceship. There test includes diving into the earths atmosphere at full space speed. Any other rocket ship would break up at those speeds. Mr. Franklins ship has most major support structures built with Vanadium. A very rare metal that is many times stronger than any other know metal.

After diving into the atmosphere part of the left rear stabilizer and steering vane begins to disintegrate, a part of the ship made with traditional metals and not the vanadium. The failure causes the ship to crash but all aboard survive. Despite the accident the Solar Alliance are convinced that the Vanadium is worthwhile mining. Before now the Vanadium has been extremely rare, but a large deposit of it has been discovered on the Jupiter moon of Ios. Convinced that Mr Franklins process for using Vanadium in the structures of space ships is of immense value they commission him to begin mining it from Ios.

After some ignoring instructions Roger Manning manages to keep the Polaris on the hunt for the Space Pirates aboard the hijacked Space Academy Cruiser Pollacks. When Tom is about to divert them back to Titan so that Astro can be seen by a Doctor, Astro wakes up and insists on their continuing to search for the Pirates. Against his better judgement Tom concedes.

They find the Pollacks which have entered the asteroid belt and the Polaris remains undetected by hiding in front of Asteroid 149, which will confuse the Space Pirates radar if they are even looking. The pirates go into orbit around Asteroid 406 and launch a Jet Boat down to the surface of Asteroid 406. Tom believes like the Pirates of old, they are hiding their look on this island in space.

Continuing their search for Solar Guard Capt. Mitch Parker and his rocket scout their task seems fruitless until Roger sights a lifeboat near the orbit of Jupiter. The lifeboat is empty but the ships log indicates Captain Parker is on the surface of Jupiter.

The atmosphere on Jupiter is inhospitable to say the least and the gravity is nearly 2 1/2 times that of Earth, where each crew member weighs nearly 400 pounds making it difficult for the cadets to work on the surface. After lumbering around and weathering a Jupiter storm and ground quakes rocket scout pilot Captain Parker is found and after much effort is dragged back to the ship and rescued.

The Space Patrol Radio Show ran from October 1952 to March 1955 for 129 known episodes. The same cast of actors performed on both the TV and the radio shows. Included here is the series log for the radio version. As there was also a Space Patrol Television version running simultaneously that version of the show will be discussed elsewhere on this website.

As a further note it is one of the tragedies of collecting old time radio (OTR) that many of these old gems are lost forever and only occasionally does one of these lost shows does turn up from a previously unknown source.
