The next chapter of the Martian Chronicles opens with the crew of the Fourth Expedition landing on Mars. The search party investigating a deserted Martian city nearby their landing point have found that all of the Martians have died of chickenpox (brought by one of the first three expeditions). The crew, except for the archaeologist Spender, become joyful over the demise of the Martians. Archaeologist Spender loses his temper when one of his crew-mates starts throwing empty wine bottles at a nearby Martian building. He knocks him to the ground. When questioned by his captain, Spender explains he feels humbled by the great Martian civilization and wants the rest of the crew to act dignified. He fears that humans will demonstrate a hostile contempt for what relics and monuments the Martians left behind.
