Dimension X

This episode of Dimension X was developed as a means of advanced promotion of the George Pal’s 1950 movie of Destination Moon. The Dimension X episode was based on an advanced copy of the screenplay.

Like the movie the story was based on the legendary Robert A. Heinlein’s novel “Rocket Ship Galileo” (1947) depicting man’s first flight to the moon.

In this radio adaption our story begins later in the story when General Thayer arrives at the rocket launch site to announce their permission to test the atomic motor was denied. They then anticipate that a court order will soon follow preventing them from launching and prepare for immediate launch and sure enough a court officer arrives and our crew launch to the moon.

George Pals 1950 Destination Moon Movie

The beginning of space travel movies, for me at least, was Destination Moon Background George Pals 1950 Movie Destination Moon. Most space travel enthusiasts, agree that Destination Moon Background George Pals 1950 Movie Destination Moon began the 50′s space movie craze. It also was the foundation for most space travel movies up to and including those of the twenty-first century.

Destination Moon Background George Pals 1950 Movie Destination Moon was George Pal’s production of legendary Robert A. Heinlein’s vision depicting man’s first flight to the moon. A Space Travel visionary, General Thayer, fearing that some other nation (The un-said Russians as this was at the beginning of the Cold War.) than the United States might get to the moon before the USA with less than humane motives, will take control of the Moon.

Journey Into Space 200x137 Introduction To The 1950s BBC Science Fiction Series Journey into Space

Journey into Space

This website is dedicated to those shows that gave me my first vision of space travel (The vision Robert A. Heinlein gave us) as a young lad in the early 1950′s. The radio show “Journey Into Space” was not one of them. In fact I never heard it until the early 2000′s. But when I finally discovered this series I so enjoyed it (especially the first story Operation Luna) that I must include it here because it does fit the vision of Heinlein’s space travel.

Journey into Space was written by BBC producer Charles Chilton, who’s previous credits include a Western serial, “Riders Of The Range” and later a producer for the final episodes of “The Goon Show.” Journey into Space was as it’s title suggests a science fiction adventure serial that ran for three epic series and told the tale of man’s attempts to conquer first The Moon and later Mars over 50 plus episodes during the 1950′s. Journey into Space – Operation Luna was originally broadcast on the BBC Light Programme on 21 September 1953 (Monday evenings at 7.30pm). Final transmission was on the 19th of January 1954.

Dimension X Show 188x200 Introduction To The 1950s Science Fiction Anthology Radio Show Dimension X

Dimension X

Dimension X, was an NBC radio program broadcast on an un-sponsored weekly basis from April 8, 1950 to September 29, 1951 for a total of 50 episodes. With a five-month hiatus from January 1951 to June 1951, the series spanned 17 months. All 50 episodes of the series survived and will over time be added to the Spacemen’s Luck website for your listening enjoyment. The first 13 episodes were broadcast live, and the remainder were transcribed (pre-recorded). These stories were not kiddie space shows like Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon. They were thoughtful and sometimes down beat stories based on more serious science fiction stories.

Dimension X, was the first science fiction series to use stories adapted from Sci-Fi pulp magazines of the day like Amazing Science Fiction, Thrilling Wonder and Astounding Science Fiction Magazine (which eventually sponsored the show). Classic tales by Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut, Robert Bloch and Isaac Asimov were brought to life in the minds eye of numerous listeners.

Space Patrol Show Logo

Space Patrol was a science fiction juvenile adventure with shows on both television and radio. Space Patrol was created by Mike Moser, a former U.S. Navy Air Force Veteran who had been in charge of training hurricane-hunter squadrons in World War II. The TV show’s success spawned a radio version from October 1952 to March 1955 running for 129 episodes. The same cast of actors performed on both the TV and the radio shows. Similarly the writers, scripts, story lines and director were used. The TV and radio versions ran separate adventures, with some of the TV villains also appearing on the radio show.

I believe that the concept of Space Patrol came straight from the Golden Age of space era popularized by Robert Heinlein’s book “Space Cadet.” Space Cadet was a 1948 science fiction novel about Matt Dodson, who joins the Space Patrol to help preserve peace in the Solar System. The story is a military academy story translated into an outer space story of a teenage boy from Iowa who goes to the Military Academy to become an officer and sees action and adventure, assumes responsibilities far beyond his years, and becomes a man.
