After Commander Burke back on Venus receives the Cadets request for additional forces, Burke didn’t believe them and instead of sending reinforcements and weapons he sends medics including a Dr. Ashton and Nurse Leslie Everett to Mercury in an unarmed Space Freighter because he didn’t believe their story of a giant man believing they have gone Zero “A.”

Captain Strong and Cadet Tom Corbett are assigned to assist an inventor named Mr. Franklin in the testing of an experimental spaceship. There test includes diving into the earths atmosphere at full space speed. Any other rocket ship would break up at those speeds. Mr. Franklins ship has most major support structures built with Vanadium. A very rare metal that is many times stronger than any other know metal.

After diving into the atmosphere part of the left rear stabilizer and steering vane begins to disintegrate, a part of the ship made with traditional metals and not the vanadium. The failure causes the ship to crash but all aboard survive. Despite the accident the Solar Alliance are convinced that the Vanadium is worthwhile mining. Before now the Vanadium has been extremely rare, but a large deposit of it has been discovered on the Jupiter moon of Ios. Convinced that Mr Franklins process for using Vanadium in the structures of space ships is of immense value they commission him to begin mining it from Ios.

Science Fiction Theater Logo About Spacemens Luck

Logo For The Classic 1950's TV Show Science Fiction Theater

My name is Thurman “Ray” Plumlee Space Cadet (Senior Rating), and I’m an Old Time Radio (OTR) and classic Sci-fi TV and Movie fan. Specifically those that related to adventures in space and space travel.  My personal dedication goes beyond just the collecting of these programs. I am interested in their preservation and propagation. What I mean by propagation is the evangelism of these little gems of Americana. Thus the purpose of this website.

I was born in 1947 so many of my childhood memories center around a lot of these programs and movies of the 1950′s and early 1960′s. My strongest child hood memories are those of Space Patrol and Science Fiction Theater (I never forgot that theme music) and Tom Corbett, Space Cadet. On this one I remember the character Cadet Roger Manning played by Jan Merlin even better. This is because I met Jan Merlin at a county fair in Fontana, California about 1958 when he was on a promotion tour of his new TV series a post civil war half hour weekly show titled “The Rough Riders”. In the The Rough Riders he played Lieutenant Colin Kirby.
