Journey into Space

In the previous episode (Episode 5) we left our space weary travelers launching from the moon and keeping to their original plans they make one orbit around the moon to be the first to see the dark side of the moon. We pickup the story here as they are now in lunar orbit on the back side peering down at the surface when suddenly they see one extremely large crater with dozens of little craters inside of it. Then Lemmy points out that those are not little craters but ships that are rising up very fast toward them.

At first the crew panics thinking they are coming up after them to destroy them but the strange craft settle into a hovering orbit just below the rocketship Luna. Once the they are back around the moon in their orbit with their ship again facing toward the earth they cut in their engines and blast for earth.

2000 Plus

It is with regret that, for now I hope, there are no more 2000 Plus “Space Travel” related episodes known to be in circulation. There are a handful of episodes in the series that are in circulation but are not part of this website as they were not “space travel” themed shows. 2000 Plus (also called Two Thousand Plus and 2000+) was an Old Time Radio (OTR) series which ran from March 15, 1950 to January 2, 1952 in various 30-minute time slots. It is most notable for being the first adult science fiction series on radio, airing one month prior to the better known Dimension X.

During the 1950s, science fiction became a popular genre, and stories exploring future technologies, space expeditions and alien invasions made up the story lines of the episodes that are known today and available for listening.

1951 Movie The Thing from Another World Movie Title Card

1951 Movie The Thing from Another World Movie Title Card

The 1951 “creature feature” The Thing from Another World also known simply as “The Thing” was a ground breaking film that was the first movie to ever depict aliens with an attitude that seem to have only one thing on their mind and that is everyone. This theme of destroy humanity films became very prevalent during the 1950′s. Some say, and I am one of those who does, that “The Thing” was at least a partial inspiration for the much later ground breaking 1979 “creature feature” Alien, staring Sigourney Weaver which spawned several sequels.

1951′s The Thing from Another World is a story of Scientist at an US military Arctic research station, inside the Arctic Circle, who discover an unexplained object buried in the ice. After notifying the U.S. Air Force a plane load of Airmen and a lone news reporter are dispatched to the Arctic research station. There first belief is that buried craft is a Russian spy-plane buried in the ice.

Dimension X

This episode of Dimension X was developed as a means of advanced promotion of the George Pal’s 1950 movie of Destination Moon. The Dimension X episode was based on an advanced copy of the screenplay.

Like the movie the story was based on the legendary Robert A. Heinlein’s novel “Rocket Ship Galileo” (1947) depicting man’s first flight to the moon.

In this radio adaption our story begins later in the story when General Thayer arrives at the rocket launch site to announce their permission to test the atomic motor was denied. They then anticipate that a court order will soon follow preventing them from launching and prepare for immediate launch and sure enough a court officer arrives and our crew launch to the moon.

Journey into Space

We join our lunar astronauts just after Jet presses the rocket ignition button and nothing happened. Then one by one all the ships systems shut down and they are left in a dead ship. Everything is quiet except for the sound of the ship’s master gyro whirring down until it stops.

After a complete inspection of the ships power system they can find nothing wrong except nothing has power. As Jet so concisely puts it unless they can find something they are stuck, stranded on the moon.

March 31, 1966 : USSR’s Luna 10 Launched Toward The Moon Becoming First Spacecraft To Orbit Moon Or Any Other Heavenly Body

USSR’s Luna 10 was an unmanned space mission of the Luna program, also called Lunik 10. The Luna 10 spacecraft was launched towards the Moon from an Earth orbiting platform on March 31, 1966. It was the first artificial satellite of the Moon (or another heavenly body, for that matter).

The spacecraft entered lunar orbit on April 3, 1966 and completed its first orbit 3 hours later (on April 4, Moscow time). Scientific instruments included a gamma-ray spectrometer, a triaxial magnetometer, a meteorite detector, instruments for solar-plasma studies, and devices for measuring infrared emissions from the Moon and radiation conditions of the lunar environment. Gravitational studies were also conducted.

The spacecraft played back to Earth the "International" during the Twenty-third Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Luna 10 was battery powered and operated for 460 lunar orbits and 219 active data transmissions before radio signals were discontinued on 30 May 1966.

Luna 10 is still in orbit.

March 31, 1970 : USA Explorer 1, First US Satellite Reentered Earth’s Atmosphere After 12 Years In Orbit

USA Explorer 1 was the first successfully launched US satellite. Launched 1 February 1958 on an adapted Jupiter-C rocket, Explorer 1 carried instrumentation for the study of cosmic rays, micrometeorites, and for monitoring of the satellite’s temperature. Explorer 1 re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere on 31 March 1970, after more than twelve years in orbit.

March 31, 1997 : USA Ended Pioneer 10 Mission After 25 Years And Will Arrive Aldeberan In Constellation Taurus In 2 Million Years

After 25 years of operation, routine telemetry and ground control with Pioneer 10 it’s mission was terminated when funding was cut off in favor of more scientifically productive heliospheric missions.

The probe at that time iwas 6.7 billion miles from Earth, traveling at 28,000 miles per hour. In two million years, it will reach the red giant Aldeberan in the constellation of Taurus.

However, as part of a training program, American controllers of the Lunar Prospector spacecraft, in orbit around the Moon, were given permission to contact Pioneer 10 once again in 1998. Since that time, Pioneer 10′s weak signal has been tracked by the DSN as part of a study of advanced communication technology for future interstellar probes.
